Where to eat in San Candido, our local recommendations
When we decided to open our hotel in the Dolomites we wanted to offer a bed and breakfast accommodation, because we love to experience the food and the restaurants of the place we’re visiting. When we were in South Africa we ran a famous Italian restaurant, so we know the importance of the experience in food. We decided to share with you our recommendations where to eat in San Candido e surroundings.
Theatercafé Zentral in San Candido
It is located next door to Zenana B&B in the city center of Innichen.This restaurant offers the typical South Tyrol’s cuisine and we suggest to order the knodels, that are large round boiled bread dumplings in broth or in butter, and the San Candido cheese on the grill. The Theatercafé Zentral is also an Italian pizzeria.

Kugler Speckstube in Toblach
In the surroundings of San Candido, just few minutes driving from our hotel, there is lovely restaurant. The Kugler Speckstube is located on top of Toblach and offers a fantastic view over the town and the mountains. This family-run restaurant is in wood and has a large stove, stube in German language, in the main room; it’s famous for the pasta Schlutzkrapfen, Tirolean-style ravioli, and for the homemade smoked bacon called Speck in Italian and German. The entire family has been producing this ham for ages.
Il Fienile at Toblach See
The Lake of Dobbiaco or Toblach See, is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Dolomites! We like to go there in every season but during Spring and Summer we love eating out on the large terrace of the Il Fienile restaurant, right in front of the lake.We recommend to order the Grostl, an Alpine plate of bacon, onion and potato fry-up served with a fried egg, and the Austrian Wiener schintzel with pommes frittes.
Rifugio Baranci in San Candido
It is the mountain shelter on top of Mount Baranci, that you can see also from the your room at hotel Zenana.It is made in wood and has a large terrace offering a great view over San Candido and the Dolomites. We suggest to try the potato Rosti with bacon and onions; end your meal with the Strauben, typical fried dessert served with red berries jam.
Unserstaller Alm in Innervillgraten
Beyond the Austrian border within one of the most beautiful valleys of the Dolomites in Spring, we love eating at the Unserstaller Alm. It is a very typical mountain alm with the cows around in Summer that serves Tyrolean cuisine; whatever you order remember to order the fried apple dessert!
